Social Work is THE BEST profession!
Social Workers are SUPERheroes! Argue with someone else, because I will not budge on this stance. I have been working in social services for almost 20 years and I have no regrets! From my practicum experience, to the multiple hats I wear today, I could not have chosen a better field! I want to share my secrets to ignite and sustain your passion for the field!
I did not ALWAYS believe that “Social Workers were SUPER!” My experience with social services started in childhood when someone anonymously called Child Protective Services on my mother. My mother was a teenager with limited resources, but did, and is still doing, the best she could to raise amazing human beings. The call was not substantiated, but that experience provided me with a very limited and negative view of what Social Workers did professionally. In college, I learned the extensiveness of the field of social work and it changed my perspective forever!
Professionally, I have survived and THRIVED through it all:
- Being bogged down by countless progress notes and documentation deadlines
- Costly wear and tear to my vehicle while on the job
- Working as the ONLY Social Worker in a school district of hundreds of students
- Lunch duty, late parent pick-up, mending and washing laundry
- Food pantry shopping
- Fear about the safety of my clients and sometimes myself
- Threats from parents
- Cancelled therapy appointments and sliding scale fees
- Home visits with nude clients
I have stories for days and I am sure you do too!
The work we do is so very necessary! It is life changing for us and our clients. To do it well with continued passion for the work AND to do it long enough to have such rich and colorful stories takes REAL strategy, not luck.
